Life in a restricted area

The inner german border 1949 to 1989

The GRENZHUS in Schlagsdorf, Mecklenburg preserves German history as it came to pass along the border from the Baltic Sea to the river Elbe. Everyday life in an exceptional political situation, including border incidents, flight and displacement, eliminated villages and, finally, the events of autumn 1989 are the main topics the GRENZHUS museum and information centre is to  present.

Borders as they appear in political life as well as in nature have many aspects. They determine everybody's life, human and environmental relations; on one hand they protect, on the other hand they restrict and divide.

The borderline between east and west in common memory

On the following pages, you are presented a short clipping on the insights the GRENZHUS can provide on the segregation between east and west from the views of both eastern and western citizens.

We're glad about every visitor to the GRENZHUS who wants to get a broad view into the period of the German Democratic Republic and it's consequences to the inhabitants of the border area.
